Chlorine, Chloramine,ย  and other chemicals are added to our tap water to kill dangerous bacteria. Having to much Chlorine can cause "chlorine toxicity" in your plants and even kill off all your essential micro bacteria in the soil. Here is what you can setup to reduce Chlorine levels by allowing it to evaporate.

Items needed:

The Air stone will keep adding Oxygen to the water which will naturally lower pH and help evaporate the Chlorine, I also let it sit for 24 hours before using to water. With my Tap water and this setup my PPM tests in at 154.

Having had an aquarium in the past, I was familiar with dechlorinating water but wasn't sure if it would be necessary for hydroponics.

Aquarium keepers can use a chemical dechlorinator, which I imagine would be safe for plants: as well as the fish themselves, they need to be safe for the beneficial bacteria that inhabit the water filter.

As chlorine is rather volatile, simply leaving a bucket of water out overnight should be sufficient: stirring the water, or as you have done, bubbling air through it (to produce turbulence) speeds the process up but isn't strictly necessary.

Something I'm unsure of is the effect ofย chloramine on the plants. The volatility of chlorine is the very reason that some water suppliers are replacing it with chloramine, which is non-volatile and won't be removed by evaporation.

I wonder if anyone has looked into this?
