I am not an expert but I think it is more about how long you plan on using the res, not necessarily how big it is. The longer you go at high temps the more you risk root rot bacteria or algae setting in. IMO its pretty important for cannabis as it is sitting in the res for months. If you don't have a chiller you will need to do very deep cleaning once a month or more, and you still risk root rot.

Thank you! I grow in Pro-Mix with a drip system, the water temperature seems to be pretty stable.

Thank you for posting!!. I'm late to the party but this is awesome info. I have not been using a chiller yet, I do weekly res cleaning when I do my change outs. But it's just 5gal bucket which is easy to deal with, also doing short growing Auto's. Once I move to longer growing plants and larger res's I'll be adding some form of chiller.
